turned 40 last week, and tight end
was asked what he got his quarterback as a birthday present. It’s actually an ongoing gift.
“I get him touchdowns,” Gronkowski said.
He’s going to get Brady plenty of touchdowns this year. Gronkowski is worth drafting in the second round in the majority of leagues, and that’s where he went in this 12-team standard mock draft.
There are plenty of Fantasy owners worried about Gronkowski this year. He was limited to eight games because of a back injury last season, and the Patriots added new weapons in the passing game this year with
to go with
So along with the annual injury risk, there is a fear that Gronkowski could lose some production. There’s also the thought that the rest of the tight end field has caught up to Gronkowski, who has been the best player at his position when healthy for the better part of the past seven years, with guys like
. And those guys come at a discounted price.
While those are valid concerns, especially the injury risk, if you can get Gronkowski in the middle of Round 2 — his Average Draft Position is No. 21 overall and he went No. 20 here — he’s worth it. Prior to last season, Gronkowski played 15 games in 2014 and 2015, and he averaged 77 catches for 1,150 yards and 11 touchdowns over that span.
Gronkowski has scored double digits in touchdowns in all five seasons where he’s played at least 11 games, and he has three years since 2011 with at least 72 catches, 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns. To put that in perspective, only five tight ends had more than 70 catches last season, only one had more than 1,100 yards and none scored more than eight touchdowns.
When Gronkowski is on the field he’s the biggest difference maker at any position. And right now he’s healthy, so you should buy in to what could be tremendous production, including plenty of birthday presents for Brady.
I actually drafted Gronkowski in Round 2 after starting my team with
at No. 5 overall. The rest of my receiving corps is
