Android O release date could be as soon as THIS week, Pixel phones first to get 8.0 update | Tech | Life & Style

Android fans could be getting the latest version of the popular operating system as early as this week.

Android O, also known as Android 8.0, could have a release date at some point this week with Pixel and Pixel XL owners being able to download it first.

Google had previously said they would launch the Android O update in the third quarter of this year, which we only have a few weeks left off.

And previously it was reported that the Android O release date would come during the first two weeks of August.

And now that same source, David Ruddock from Android Police, has tweeted to say the release of Android 8.0 is imminent.

Last Wednesday he tweeted: “I’d look for the official Google Pixel Android O update to land in about a week.

“Could be pushed, but that’s the timeline for now AFAIK.”

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL will be the first devices to get the Android O update, as well as older Nexus handsets eligible for the upgrade.

Google have confirmed that Android O, which began testing back in May, is Android 8.0.

And there’s been much rumour about what the O in the mobile operating system’s name stands for.

However, it looks like the successor to Nougat may instead be called Oatmeal Cookie.

The possible name for Android 8.0 was discovered in June by tech website Myce after they dug around in the code for Google’s upcoming mobile OS.

They found oc-dev mentioned a number of times within the code, which seems to follow on from former branch names used by Google.

Oc-dev is also referred to as OC-MR1 in messages relating to Android O.

If those two characters are initials for what Android 8.0 is called, then the most likely name for the mobile OS could be Android Oatmeal Cookie.

It would follow on from other treat-based names that Google called previous versions of Android, such as the current Android Nougat.

So far we know that Android O will feature notification channels, picture-in-picture video, adaptive icons, as well as support for multi-display.

The next-generation version of Android includes faster boot-up times, better performance, tweaked notifications and improved battery life.

But overall, Android 8.0 is not about headline-grabbing new features. Instead, it will double-down on performance tweaks that make the everyday experience better for users.

Smart text selection is also being introduced in Android O.

It will also include faster boot-up times, better performance…
