The other day, I decided I needed to clean out my closet, including a lot of shoes that have just been collecting dust.
Among them was a hardly used, beautiful pair of golf shoes — classic white and brown oxford with not even a scuff on them.
I had given up golf several years ago for a variety of physical reasons like carpal tunnel, arthritis, gout, tendinitis and anything else ending in “itis.”
But the golf shoes did make me long to participate in this Saturday’s 22nd annual Kelly Osborn Casino Bowling Memorial Fundraiser at Fountain Bowl. This is a daylong event that begins with a golf tournament at the David L. Baker Golf Course.
Kelly, the daughter of retired Fountain Bowl co-shareholder Dave Osborn, died in an automobile accident in July 1996, at the age of 19.
Dave Osborn started the Kelly Osborn Memorial Scholarship Fund for the purpose of granting college scholarships each year to one or more deserving students who might otherwise not be able to attend the higher educational institution of their choice.
In 2016, more than $25,000 was raised to assist local students with their college educations, and since the scholarship fund’s inception, more than $275,000 has been given to help further students’ educations.
As I mentioned earlier, the fundraiser starts with the “Ozzie’s Awesome” golf tournament in the morning. I once shot a 122 at David L. Baker. Or maybe it was 132.
Anyway, the best ball scramble tournament costs $85, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart rental and admission to the fundraising casino bowling event, food, door prizes and an auction.
Cost for bowling only is $30 per individual. The bowling portion of the event begins at 6 p.m., but food will be available for participants starting at 4 p.m., and bowling check-in begins at 5 p.m.
This bowling event is usually a sellout. Anyone who has a group of 8-10 people can prepay for this event at the Fountain Bowl front desk to guarantee that the group bowls together.

Here’s another golf option that’s for a great cause: The Fountain Valley Schools Foundation will hold its next Marc Ecker Golf Tournament on Monday, Oct. 23, at Mile Square Golf Course. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and a shotgun start is set for noon.
Registration is $175 per golfer, which includes golf, all mulligan package games, warm-up range balls, lunch and awards banquet dinner. Participants will receive a…
