Quantitative Methodology for the Sierra Leone Community College Project

The topic of study using quantitative methodology is implementation of a community college system in Sierra Leone. The purpose of the study is to facilitate development efforts of establishing a community college system in Sierra Leone based on the U.S model of community college systems. The study presents and analyzes problems of education, poverty, unemployment and the plan of action are the proposal of a viable solution of implementing a community college system. The specific research question is, “What are ways to implement a community college system in Sierra Leone using quantitative method of research?” The problem of study includes analysis of the historical, sociological, traditional and cultural perspectives. According to Hair (2001) a conceptual framework for research serves as a vehicle for incorporating prior knowledge and linking the research to a larger body of knowledge in the areas of the problem. Quantitative research is employed to collect and analyze data. As a scientific method, the researcher will test hypothesis and theory with data. Since quantitative research is not the only approach in this study, a mixed research method is also employed so that quantitative, qualitative methods, techniques and other paradigm characteristics are mixed in the overall study. For example surveys and questionnaires are composed with closed ended or quantitative type items as well as qualitative type items. The researcher will also collect qualitative data but then try to quantify the data. When different approaches are used to focus on the same phenomenon and they provide the same results, one has “corroboration” which means superior evidence for results. The most common research objectives are description, explanation and prediction. As a quantitative method, the form of data will be based on precise measurement using structured and validated data collection instruments e.g closed ended items, rating scales and behavioral responses.

As a quantitative method, data analysis will identify statistical relationships. Since the most basic building blocks of quantitative research methods are variables, to classify levels of measurement will be categorical variables that is made up of different types of categories of phenomena. Variables are the ingredients of research prospects. A variable is any entity that can take on a variety of different values. The manipulation, measurement and control of variables is the primary mission of research. Quantitative variables will deter-mine the variation in degree or amount of the phenomenon. The roles taken by the variables are the independent variable that is presumed to cause changes to occur in another variable. The dependent variable is the effect or outcome variable. In this research on implementing a community college system in Sierra Leone, the independent variable is part of the research environment that is manipulated or changes that are made while studying. The dependent variable is…
