Registration is filling up for a 21-week introduction to Judaism course that begins in fall 2017 and runs through spring 2018. Interested parties should sign up now.
As part of one’s registration in the course, a free bonus class to introduce the Jewish High Holidays is scheduled for September 7, 2017, at Congregation Bonai Shalom, 1527 Cherryvale Road in Boulder.
The course, “Ikar: The Essentials of Judaism,” is for interfaith couples, people considering religious conversion, Jews looking for an adult-level introduction or anyone who wants to learn more about Judaism.
Leaders from congregations in Boulder affiliated with Haver, the Boulder Rabbinic Council, teach Ikar classes on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Boulder JCC, 6007 Oreg Avenue, Boulder, Colo. 80303.
“We have brought together star teachers and a comprehensive, carefully constructed curriculum. It’s a winner. Haver is thrilled to be able to offer a course that specifically addresses the needs of the Boulder community and presents material from different viewpoints,” says Rabbi Jamie Korngold, a Haver member and spiritual leader of Adventure Rabbi, who taught part of the Ikar course when it started years ago.
Ikar teaches essential elements of Jewish thought, tradition and practice from a wide-ranging, non-denominational perspective. Topics include lifecycle events, rituals, holidays, history, prayer and theology.
Dr. Sarah Levy, Director of Adult Education for Colorado Agency for Jewish Education, developed the curriculum with Haver to reflect the interests of the community in and around Boulder. Course material is introduced in a pluralistic way and is drawn from multiple sources and perspectives. The course offers experiential learning opportunities and panel presentations on topics such as distinctions among various Jewish denominations.
Six educators from Haver, including Rabbi Tirzah Firestone, Morah (teacher) Yehudis Fishman, Rabbi Ruth Gelfarb, Rabbi Fred Greene, Rabbi Ori Har, Rabbi Hannah Laner and Rabbi Marc Soloway will each teach a block of three classes.
The course is $400 for an individual or $600 per couple and includes a digital version of a student handbook. Regular classes begin October 19, 2017, and run through April 19, 2018.
There will be no classes on November 23 and December 28, 2017 or on January 4, March 1 and 29, and April 5, 2018.
