People of all ages can relate to the embarrassment, annoyance and stress that acne can cause. However, the good news is that the answer to this problem can be found in our pantry. Cosmetic chemist Candice Kalil, explains that home remedies are often kinder to the skin than products found in store.
“Too much scrubbing or cleansing with harsh soaps that contain chemicals can actually irritate and make your acne worse. If you over-clean you can end up drying out your skin.”
In her experience, the simple, efficient solution lies in the natural products that we keep at home.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Her first home-remedy involves apple cider vinegar. This is commonly used in salad dressings and known for it’s cleansing powers used in weight management. Kalil says that this vinegar kills off the bacteria that may be causing acne. It then further acts as an astringent, like lemon juice, and helps dry up excess oil.
The application of the apple cider vinegar is relatively simple. Kalil elaborated, “Wash your face with tap water and pat dry. Using a ratio of one part vinegar to three parts water, dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply it directly to the spot. Leave this on for at least 15 minutes, or overnight.”
Healthy Mask Made From Honey
However, this array of ingredients can also be used to make a face mask. Kalil stresses that cinnamon, ginger and turmeric have antimicrobial properties. And can help stop the bacteria on the skin from getting out of hand and honey is a natural antibiotic. (2)
Mix 2 tablespoons of honey and half a teaspoon of cinnamon, ginger and turmeric together until they are thoroughly blended and have formed a paste. Then apply the mask to your face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Before rinsing the mixture off completely, and pat your face dry.
Cleopatra swore by milk baths. And, according to Kalil, this iconic Egyptian was right as milk not only soothes the skin but moisturizes it as well.
She believes that milk is an anti-inflammatory that soothes irritated, acne prone skin, and also helps to tone down the redness that acne causes. This creative cosmetic chemist has invented an interesting, delicious remedy using dairy products.
