Watch Colin Kaepernick accept the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award, presented by Beyoncé – Orange County Register

Colin Kaepernick was presented with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award by Beyoncé at the Sports Illustrated Awards.

“With or without the NFL’s platform, I will continue to work for the people,” Kaepernick said during his acceptance speech.

The awards show will be televised on NBC Sports at 5 p.m. PST on December 8.

Before Kaepernick walked on stage to accept the honor, Beyoncé said:

“Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion—only hope to change the world for the better. To change perception. To change the way we treat each other—especially people of color. We’re still waiting for the world to catch up. It’s been said that racism is so American that when we protest racism, some assume we’re protesting America.”

Kaepernick has not played during the 2017-18 NFL season but many players within the league carried his message at the beginning of the season by taking a knee during the national anthem.

As a member of the San Francisco 49ers during the 2016-17, Kaepernick would take a knee during the national anthem as a sign of protest against police brutality.

Kaepernick was also honored at the Nation Institute’s Gala on the same night.
